Modern kitchen with contemporary design trends

Kitchen renovations represent one of the largest investments most homeowners will make, so following a fleeting trend can be an expensive mistake. The trick is to distinguish between movements that reflect genuine shifts in how we use kitchens and surface-level fads that will feel dated within a few years. Here are the trends we are seeing in our projects right now that we believe have staying power.

Fluted and Ribbed Surfaces

Fluted panelling has moved well beyond a novelty detail. We are specifying it on island fronts, overhead cabinet doors, rangehood surrounds, and even bathroom vanities. The subtle vertical texture adds depth and interest to otherwise flat surfaces without introducing colour or pattern, which makes it remarkably versatile. Timber fluting in natural oak or walnut brings warmth, while painted fluting in a deep green or navy adds sophistication.

Concealed and Integrated Appliances

The trend toward hiding appliances behind cabinetry panels continues to gain momentum. Integrated refrigerators, dishwashers, and even microwaves that sit flush with surrounding joinery create a seamless, furniture-like appearance that makes the kitchen feel less utilitarian and more like a living space. This approach is especially effective in open-plan homes where the kitchen is always on display.

Appliance garages — countertop-height cabinets with tambour or bi-fold doors that conceal toasters, kettles, and stand mixers — have become a standard inclusion in our designs. They keep the bench clear without banishing everyday items to deep cupboards.

Natural Stone and Terrazzo

Engineered stone still dominates the benchtop market, but we are seeing a resurgence of natural stone — marble, granite, and quartzite — chosen specifically for its imperfections. Clients are embracing veining, colour variation, and patina rather than seeking the uniformity that engineered products offer. Each slab is unique, and that individuality is the point.

Terrazzo, with its scattered chips of marble or glass embedded in a cement or resin base, has made a convincing comeback on splashbacks, flooring, and even benchtops. It pairs well with both minimalist and maximalist schemes and ages gracefully.

Warm Metals and Mixed Finishes

Brushed brass, aged bronze, and matte gold hardware have largely displaced chrome and stainless steel in our recent projects. These warm metals pair beautifully with timber, natural stone, and muted paint colours. We are also mixing metal finishes within a single kitchen — brass tap and handles alongside a matte black rangehood, for example — which was considered a design faux pas a decade ago but now reads as confident and layered.

Deeper, Moodier Colour Palettes

All-white kitchens had a long reign, but the pendulum has swung toward richer, more saturated tones. Sage green, deep teal, charcoal, and even terracotta are appearing on cabinetry and island fronts. These colours ground the space and create a sense of enclosure and warmth that white simply cannot deliver. Often the deeper colour is reserved for the lower cabinets or island, with lighter tones above to maintain a sense of openness.

Open Shelving — Refined

Open shelving went through a peak of popularity and then a backlash as homeowners discovered how much dusting is involved. The refined version we are specifying now is more selective — a single run of open shelves above the coffee station, a few floating shelves flanking a window — rather than entire walls of exposed storage. This approach gives you the aesthetic benefit without the maintenance burden, and it encourages editing your displayed items to only the pieces you genuinely love.

The Bottom Line

The best kitchen trends are those that improve how the room functions, not just how it photographs. Concealed appliances make cleaning easier. Warm metals and natural stone age better than their synthetic alternatives. Deeper colours create rooms that feel welcoming rather than clinical. If a trend passes both the aesthetic and the practical test, it is worth adopting. If it only passes one, approach with caution.
